Skinny Teas: The Harmful Quick Fix That You Need To Stay Away From

Growing up I was always very health conscious, always reading about nutrition, exploring recipes, and trying to keep up to date with the newest trends on the market. Something I stumbled across a few years ago when I was experimenting with supplements and new products was the new epidemic that was 'Fit Teas'. Being curious, I tried these out to experiment in this new and expanding area that was booming on social media. Boy, did I regret it.

The promises of near-instant weight loss and the ability for these products to completely 'cleanse' all toxins out of your body was the initial reason I purchased these teas, like most other people trying them out. However, what I did not know was exactly how harmful these were going to be for my body. I spent the week extremely ill, weak, and yes, I lost some weight after I jumped on the scales at the end. Was it long lasting? Nope. Did I feel great after it? Absolutely not.

You see, the main reason 'skinny' teas led to these side effects and weight loss for me is and was due to the ingredients within these products that can be seriously harmful. 'Skinny' or 'Fit Teas' as they are marketed as, are a blend of different ingredients that quite simply, cause your bowels to expel their entire contents out of your body. Senna leaf is one of the main active ingredients, which is used as a laxative treatment for those struggling with severe constipation or as a pre-treatment to a colonoscopy. The high potency of diuretics within the ingredients also leads to a large amount of water loss in your body which is the main cause of the 'weight loss' (actually just water loss, not fat).

The result of this is that you impair nutrient absorption from any food that you ingest, upset the lining of your intestines, disrupt the natural process of your body detoxing itself, dehydrate your entire body of water, and leave yourself in a state of illness and distress due to the many unpleasant side effects such as cramping, diarrhoea, pains, disruption with menstrual cycle, fatigue and loss of appetite.

As a nutritionist I urge many people, especially young girls, not to follow this 'Insta fashionable' trend that is being endorsed and hyped by countless celebrities. The industry of Skinny Teas is continuing to expand, despite negative press and feedback from consumers. These products can be seriously harmful for your health and by no means will help burn fat at a healthy rate. Looking after your wellbeing should be a prime factor in any weight loss regime, and a quick fix like Fit Teas will certainly not do that for you.
